These awards underscore Ethiopia’s rising influence across technology, environment, agriculture and tourism.

Ethiopia has positioned itself at the forefront of Africa’s digital revolution. It established the continent’s first Artificial Intelligence Institute and is building the World’s second AI University. The Fayda National Identity System now connects 132 institutions, demanding 2396 services across 476 agencies. With 41 million Fayda ID users and 58 million mobile money customers, Ethiopia is reducing reliance on cash, cutting bureaucracy, and advancing toward its 2030 digital goals.

Beyond technology, Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative has become a global model for environmental safekeeping. Since 2011 more than 48 billion trees have been planted, increasing forest cover to 23% in the last six years.

This initiative has created jobs, restored ecosystems, and earned Ethiopia the FAO 2025 Achievement Award for sustainable Forestry. The country now leads international climate discussions, aligning conversations with economic growth and food security.

Tourism and agriculture also reflect Ethiopia’s transformation. Investments in urban regeneration and natural tourism have revitalized cities and boosted regional connectivity. In agriculture the ‘Wheat Food Sovereignty’ program expanded production from 27 million quintals in 2010 to 280 280 million quintals in 2017, achieving self-sufficiency and raising farmer incomes.

These achievements are not only awards but enduring foundations. Ethiopia’s vision gained by measurable results, is shaping a future where innovation, sustainability and unity define national progress and continental leadership.

April 19, 2018 The African Union’s recent appointment of the Prime Minister as Champion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Health increases to a stand of prestigious honors, including the FAO Agricola Medal, the Outstanding African Leadership Award, and recognition as IGAD Tourism Champion.
