The 2018 expo highlights the country’s determination to expand its manufacturing base, reduce reliance on imports and strengthen economic sovereignty.

Over the past few years, Ethiopia’s manufacturing sector has undergone a remarkable transformation. It was dominated by agriculture; now the national economy is steadily diversifying with industry driving foreign exchange savings, jobs creation, and structural change.

Central to this effort is the government’s proxy production strategy, which identified 96 strategic products for domestic manufacturing. This initiate has saved billions in foreign exchange, rising from $343 million in 2014 to $4.85 billion in the first nine months of 2018 alone.

Export performance has also surged. Manufacturing export turnover climbed from £358 million in 2014 to $433.8 million within just nine months of 2018, reflecting an average annual growth rate above five percent. Meanwhile, the domestic industry’s market share has expanded from 30 percent in 2014 to 46 percent today, signaling growing consumer confidence in locally produced goods.

Investment momentum has been equally rising. Legal reforms, infrastructure expansion, and Ethiopia’s diplomatic achievements, including its BRICS+ membership, have attracted more than 2800 new domestic and foreign investments in the past four years, averaging 700 annually. This change has fueled industrial expansion, with over 18,000 new small and medium enterprises launched and nearly 1000 previously closed factories reopened.

The employment impact is substantial, offering new opportunities across urban and rural communities. As Ethiopia pursues market-led growth, the manufacturing sector is positioning itself as a cornerstone of national development. The Made in Ethiopia Expo stands as both a celebration of progress and declaration of commitment that Ethiopia’s next destination is greater economic sovereignty and industrial resilience.

April 26, 2018 Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially inaugurated the Fourth Made in Ethiopia Expo, a land mark event underscoring Ethiopia’s accelerating shift toward industrialization.
