Manufacturing Industry Sustains Sovereignty and Driving Economic Transition
April 6, 2018
In his interview with the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) emphasized the crucially of industrial sovereignty. The Government’s special focus on the manufacturing industry stems from its role as the heart of the economy.
The sector is considered an economic engine because it surpasses other industries in productivity gains and export potential. By producing goods in large quantities and with high quality, Ethiopia can strengthen its competitiveness and secure sustainable growth.
Equally important is, the role of manufacturing in structural transition. It enables the country to move from one economic era to another. Non-industrial sectors often serve as suppliers of raw materials, but industry adds value by transforming these inputs into finished products. This diversification enhances resilience and broadens economic activity.
Innovation and technology transfer is another dimension. Agriculture, long dependent on traditional methods, brought little progress until industry introduced mechanization and modern tools. This transformation sparked revival and tangible change, while also supporting the expansion of other sectors.
Manufacturing further contributes to employment creation, which boosts productivity and strengthens economic growth. Its impact extends beyond economics, serving as a pillar of sovereignty. A nation unable to produce sufficient food, clothing, medicine, and other essentials risks dependency and vulnerability. Expanding manufacturing helps by shaping this imbalance.
To achieve sovereignty, diversify the economy, generate foreign exchange, and provide adequate employment opportunities, Ethiopia must prioritize industrial expansion. The manufacturing sector is not only a driver of growth but also a safeguard of national independence.
The Government’s focus on manufacturing reflects a strategic vision: to maintain sovereignty, ensure self-reliance, and build a diversified, transitional economy capable of meeting the needs of its citizens.
