Government Invests Billions Sustaining Citizen amid Oil Crisis

April 21, 2028

The Government reaffirmed its commitment to alleviating the burden on citizen by allocating billions of dollars to sustain oil supply, even as global shortage and price increases posed serious challenges.  Yet, beyond short term measures, Ethiopia has been working diligently to build a sovereign nation capable of meeting its basic energy needs independently. This effort has already reduced the severe social and economic crises that once derived from oil dependence.

Over the past eight years, remarkable progress has been achieved in renewable energy. Ethiopia’s electricity supply come entirely front clean sources, hydropower, wind, and solar, while geothermal and nuclear projects are being developed to ensure long term reliability.

By diversifying energy, the government has shielded manufacturing industries from the shocks of global oil volatility.

By diversifying energy, the government has shielded manufacturing industries from the shocks of global oil volatility. Incentives have encouraged citizens and institutions to adopt renewable options, with electric vehicles becoming increasingly common. Today, more than 140,000 electric vehicles exist within the country while urgent action is required to multiply this figure significantly within the short term.

Major infrastructure projects underscore this transformation. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam has significantly boosted national energy capacity, while new wind farms and solar plants are being commissioned.

Private sector participation is also actively encouraged, alongside investments in oil refineries and natural gas plants to balance immediate needs. To safeguards citizens during the global crisis, the government continues to provide fuel subsidies worth 20 billion birr monthly, while pursuing alternatives to stabilize supply.

In general, Ethiopia’s green economic policy offers a sustainable path forward. The government believes that with collective effort, energy sovereignty is within reach. The ‘exit door’ from dependence is now visible, and Ethiopia is steadily moving toward a future powered by renewable energy, resilient industries, and a confident, selfreliant economy.
