Addis Ababa Riverside Transformation Drives Renewal

May 28, 2018

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has underscored the far-reaching significance of the riverside development project in Addis Ababa, describing it as a cornerstone of the city’s economic and social renewal.

More than an urban beautification effort, the initiative has become a driver of job creation across construction, engineering, landscaping, logistics, and related sectors. Local contractors, suppliers, and businesses are at the forefront, reflecting Ethiopia’s growing expertise in urban development and infrastructure delivery.

The riverside transformation is emerging as a landmark in sustainable urban renewal. Once burdened by toxic dumping and recurrent flood hazards, the riverbanks are being reshaped into greener, healthier, and more livable spaces.  The initiative integrates commercial hubs with public areas, showing how environmental restoration and economic growth can reinforce one another rather than compete.

This dual approach reflects a new era in the capital’s modernization, where ecological responsibility is inseparable from development. The project underscores Ethiopia’s commitment to building a vibrant, connected, and people-centered city.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the project is not a short-term undertaking but a long-term investment in the capital’s future. By aligning environmental renewal with economic vibrancy, Addis Ababa is being reimagined as a greener, more connected, and people-centered city.

The riverside transformation stands as a symbol of Ethiopia’s capacity to deliver sustainable urban progress while empowering communities and strengthening national pride.
