Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Calls for Tigrayan Nominations for interim President of the Region

Addis Ababa, 17 March 2017

Prime Minister Abiy Ahamed (PhD) has issued a call for nominations from the Tigrayan people for the appointment of President of the Tigray Interim Administration. The announcement has made on today 17 March 2017 which asks to involve the Tigrayan people in the selection process for the region’s new leader.

While Article 3(2) of the Decree No.533/2015 grants the Prime Minister’s authority to appoint the interim president, this call for nominations indicates a desire for broader public participation. All interested individuals are encouraged to submit their nominations, along with tangible justifications for their suitability to the Prime Minister’s Office via email at info@pmo.gov.et .

The Tigray Interim Administration was established under the framework of the Pretoria Agreement, the Federal Constitution (Article 62 (9)) and proclamation No.359/1995 with a mandate to operate for consecutive two years. However, due to delaying in fulfilling key tasks, particularly establishing conditions for regional elections, the federal government is extending the administration’s term by one year.

The Prime Minister’s decision to invite nominations aims to ensure that the new coming interim president is a figure capable of effectively managing the region, ensuring peace, stability and progress toward democratic elections.
