June 30, 2017
During the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed delivered a compelling speech emphasizing the need for reform in global governance. Speaking at the opening session dedicated to peace, security, and international cooperation, he highlighted the importance of international institutions built on mutual trust and effective collaboration among nations.
Abiy reaffirmed Ethiopia’s longstanding advocacy for comprehensive reforms in the decision-making processes of global financial institutions and normative frameworks to better support collective security and shared prosperity. Although Ethiopia officially joined BRICS in 2023, the Prime Minister underscored the country’s commitment to contributing actively to the bloc’s goal of fostering a more equitable and multipolar world order.
He also emphasized Ethiopia’s support for enhancing the representation of emerging markets and developing countries within global decision-making bodies. “BRICS has evolved from a bold idea into a powerful force for global transformation,” he stated. “With new members joining, our collective voice becomes stronger, our purpose clearer, and our potential greater.”
This summit marked Ethiopia’s first in-person participation as a full BRICS member, signaling its readiness to take on a more influential role in shaping global governance.
