Ethiopia Launches AI Unipod to Drive Digital Sovereignty
February 9, 2018
Ethiopia has stepped forward as a leader in Africa’s artificial intelligence revolution with the launch of the AI Unipod, a collaborative innovation hub established by the Ethiopian Institute of Artificial Intelligence, Addis Ababa University, and the United Nations Development Program through the Timbuctoo Initiative.
The new hub marks a decisive shift in Ethiopia’s journey from technology dependency to homegrown innovation.
Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh emphasized that in the 21st century, sovereignty is defined by the ability to control data, design digital ecosystems, and craft solutions to national challenges.
Ethiopia’s AI Unipods embodies this vision, positioning the country to shape its own technological future, said.
Aligned with the Digital Ethiopia 2030 strategy and the nation’s economic reform agenda, the initiative highlights the creativity of Ethiopia’s youth and the strength of collaborative partnerships. It is expected to serve as a development center for innovators, fostering solutions that reflect local knowledge and priorities.
Mr. Temesgen Tiruneh underscored that Ethiopia will not wait for others to determine its destiny. Instead, the country is building its future with its own wisdom and resources.
As Africa advances toward a digital era, Ethiopia aims to stand at the forefront of artificial intelligence innovation.
