Government Focuses on Women’s Inclusion in All Sectors

March 1, 2018

Ethiopia marked International Women’s Day with renewed emphasis on women’s participation in political, economic, and social spheres. Over the past five decades, Ethiopian women have moved from marginalization to becoming key actors in shaping the nation’s development and governance.

This year’s celebration, observed globally for the 115th time and locally for the 50th by the theme, “Women’s Voice for Equality and a Prosperous Ethiopia”.  Leaders and staff from various institutions gathered to highlight achievements and discuss future priorities.

State Minister of Government Communication Service Mr. Kebede Desisa, underscored the importance of honoring the movements that secured women’s rights. He urged greater efforts to enhance women’s participation in democratic elections and strengthen their economic capabilities.

Similarly, State Minister Mr. Tesfahun Gobezay reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring women’s inclusion at all levels of administration. While acknowledging progress in political participation, he stressed that more effort is needed to achieve coequality with men.

Both State Ministers noted that women leaders are increasingly shaping policies, improving service delivery, and contributing to peace and security across Ethiopia.

The discussion document prepared by the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs on the occasion of Women’s Day has presented and discussed by Mr. Endalew Mulualem, Coordinator of the Federal Institutions Monitoring and Support Desk.

Participants agreed that the day served not only as a celebration of women’s strength but also as a reminder of the challenges ahead. Ethiopia’s political landscape, they concluded, now bears the mark of women’s leadership, signaling a future of greater equality and prosperity.
