March 13, 2026
The Federal Government Communication Service expresses its profound sorrow over the tragic landslide that struck four districts of the Gamo Zone of four Woreda in the Southern Ethiopian Region on March 1, 2018 E.C following heavy rainfall.
This disaster has caused immense suffering, claiming the lives of 70 citizens and displacing many families. The government extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families, their loved ones, the people of Gamo Zone, and the wider Southern Ethiopian Region during this time of grief.
Federal and regional leaders are actively monitoring the situation and coordinating relief efforts. In partnership with the Federal Disaster Risk Management Commission, urgent measures are being taken to deliver food, shelter, and essential supplies to those affected.
Beyond immediate assistance, the government is committed to long-term rehabilitation, ensuring that victims are supported in rebuilding their lives sustainably.
Preventive measures are also underway. Communities residing in high-risk zones are being relocated to safer areas to reduce vulnerability to future disasters. Given the ongoing rainy season, citizens, particularly those in flood-prone and highland regions, are urged to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to precautionary instructions issued by government.
The Federal Government reaffirms its dedication to working closely with regional administrations and relevant partners to restore stability and provide comprehensive support.
