The past five years have marked a significant period for the nations, nationalities, and peoples of Ethiopia, allowing them unprecedented opportunities for self-governance, FDRE Government Communication Service has stated today.

The Government Communication Service observed the celebration of the 19th Ethiopian Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Day, which was organized under the theme, “National Consensus for Unity in Diversity.” The day marks the ratification of the FDRE Constitution on Hidar 29, 1987 (E.C).

The celebration of the day was marked by panel discussion, a constitutional question-and-answer competition, and various other activities that fostered engagement and reflection, particularly focusing on constitutional literacy.

In his address, Minister of Government Communication Service, Legese Tulu (PhD) emphasized the transformative nature of the past five years, underlining the current inclusive governance model which contrast with the previous system known by exclusion and interventionist party rule.
The Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and unity, urging the need to dismantle divisive narratives that have historically plagued the nation.

The Minister also noted the unique significance of this year’s celebration, as it coincides with remarkable achievements in economic development, democratic governance, and improved social services.

The event was accompanied by a presentation by Mr. Endalew Mulualem, a senior expert in the GCS, and followed by a warm discussion. The presentation titled, “National Unity and Federal Systems in Ethiopia: Challenges and the way outs,” addressed critical issues regarding constitutionalism and the promotion of a cohesive national narrative.

The participants of the event by their parts, noted that the festival will be celebrated this month and that it has stimulated cities with infrastructure development, greatly promoted nationalities, and contributed greatly to joint projects such as the Renaissance Dam. This joint event promotes a national unity, they underscored.

This year’s national day which will take place on November 29, 2017 E.C underscores a collective aspiration for unity and progress among Ethiopia’s diverse communities, reflecting a hopeful vision for the future.
The Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Day have been celebrated since Hidar 1999, E.C.
