Ethiopia’s honey production reached 250,000 tons over the past ten months, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. This growth is largely attributed to the National Beekeeping Initiative, which aims to enhance livestock productivity and support national food self-sufficiency.
The Green Legacy Program, focused on forest development, has created a favorable environment for beekeeping. Modernization efforts, including the distribution of 2.2 million modern hives, have played a vital role in boosting production. Additionally, favorable rainfall, expanding forests, and abundant flowering vegetation have further contributed to increased honey yields. With over 2.2 million beekeepers and 12 million beehives, Ethiopia leads Africa in both bee population and honey production.
This abundant resource, combined with Ethiopia’s suitable climate, offers significant opportunities for farmers and has the potential to generate substantial foreign exchange earnings. The government continues to promote sector engagement to maximize its economic benefits, encouraging more farmers to participate and thrive in this promising industry.
