Ethiopia Embarks on National Dialogue for a United Future

Addis Ababa, 25 May 2017 

The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) is committed to initiating a national dialogue aimed at resolving critical issues and laying a strong foundation for the country’s future, according to a statement issued by the Government Communication Service yesterday. 

The statement acknowledges that previous conflict resolution efforts have fallen short, often fostering distrust and hindering progress. In response, the nation is dedicated to fostering a sustainable consensus through comprehensive and inclusive consultations. 

Persistent conflicts have caused significant damage, eroding trust in national institutions and hampering the collective pursuit of national goals. The absence of inclusive dialogue has created vulnerabilities, threatening the unity and shared values that once bonded the Ethiopian people. 

To break this cycle, the establishment of the National Dialogue Commission demonstrates a firm commitment to building national consensus through extensive public engagement. The government has pledged unwavering support, ensuring the commission operates with independence and impartiality. Over the past three years, the commission has diligently prepared for this mission by engaging stakeholders across various regions and city administrations. Preparations are currently underway to extend consultations to the Tigray region, ensuring broad and inclusive representation. 

Furthermore, the 14th Federal Institutions and Associations Consultation and Agenda Collection Conference has facilitated dialogue among diverse groups, including political parties, religious organizations, and media representatives. These consultations are strategically designed to address key issues at both regional and federal levels. 

The government remains resolute in its support for the commission, committed to conducting impartial and inclusive consultations that will contribute to a more unified and prosperous Ethiopia.
