Media and Communication Sector Must Prioritize Countering Conspiracy Politics Discourse

May 28, 2017

The FDRE Government Communication Service has emphasized the importance of media and communication professionals actively combating misleading political narratives in the post-truth era. The focus should be on preventing discourse that falsely connects unrelated events, thereby distorting public perception.

Today, experts and sector leaders convened at the African Academy of Excellence under the theme, “The Role of Media and Communication in Ethiopia’s Journey to Prosperity and Future Direction.”

During the discussion, Government Communication Minister Dr. Legese Tullu highlighted Ethiopia’s progress across political, social, and economic spheres but acknowledged the ongoing challenges in effectively addressing societal needs within a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

The Minister urged the sector to prioritize food sovereignty, foreign investment, revenue generation, and policy implementation through effective project development.

A key concern raised was the spread of conspiracy discourse, which creates misleading narratives by linking speculative claims. Dr. Legese emphasized the necessity of addressing this issue to foster a more informed public.
