Ethiopia hosts summit, reinforcing its pivotal role in global food system transformation

July 26, 2017

Ethiopia is preparing to host the 2nd World Food System Summit from July 20–22, 2017 in Addis Ababa, a crucial occasion held in partnership with the Italian Government and the United Nations.

The summit recognizes Ethiopia’s growing leadership in food sovereignty, climate resilience, and inclusive development.

Four years after the inaugural summit, the global community will gather once again to assess progress and forge new paths to combat hunger and strengthen food systems. Ethiopia will share transformative achievements, among them, its successful wheat irrigation programs, the ‘bounty of initiative’, and the ‘Green Legacy’ campaign.

A key highlight is Ethiopia’s reforestation drive, over 40 billion seedlings planted across the country, with an additional five billion planned this summer in seven key locations. These climate-resilient efforts not only mitigate environmental challenges but also directly enhance food security.

The three-day gathering will bring together heads of state, ministers, scientists, producers, youth, civil society, media outlets, and private sector stakeholders, fostering cross-sector dialogue on sustainable food futures.

Ethiopia’s readiness to host this event reflects its commitment to multilateral cooperation and its transformative journey toward building a digital and diversified economy.
