Ethiopia Enhances Local Agriculture to Achieve Food Self-Sufficiency

July 29, 2017

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has reiterated Ethiopia’s commitment to achieving food independence by focusing on boosting domestic production and reducing reliance on imports. During his keynote address at the UN Food System Summit yesterday, he stressed that strengthening local agricultural capabilities is vital for economic resilience and sustainable growth.

“The government is dedicated to improving agricultural productivity and supporting indigenous industries,” he said, highlighting reforms aimed at modernizing farming methods, expanding irrigation, and assisting smallholder farmers.

This initiative aligns with Ethiopia’s broader economic reform plans, where transforming agriculture is a key component. Current efforts include investing in agro-processing facilities, improving market access, and adopting climate-smart farming technologies to help communities better withstand environmental and economic challenges.

The strategy aims not only to shield the country from global market fluctuations but also to foster innovation, create jobs, and generate value across various sectors. This reflects the government’s strong commitment to self-reliance, making food security a top priority in Ethiopia’s ongoing development efforts.
