Ethiopia has taken a significant step toward agricultural development and food sovereignty through the signing of a $2.5 billion Fertilizer Complex Shareholder Investment Agreement between Ethiopian Investment Holdings and Dangote Industries Limited.

Announced today by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, this landmark agreement will facilitate the establishment of a state of the art fertilizer production facility with an annual capacity of up to 3 million metric tons, positioning Ethiopia among the leading global producers in the sector.

The initiative is projected to generate thousands of local employment opportunities and ensure a reliable supply of fertilizer to Ethiopian farmers, many of whom have historically faced challenges in accessing essential agricultural inputs.

Prime Minister Abiy emphasized that this project will significantly enhance Ethiopia’s competitiveness within Africa and exemplifies the government’s commitment to strategic, people centered investments.

During the signing ceremony, the government also announced plans to officially inaugurate the facility on site in the coming weeks. “We have embarked on this journey, and we are committed to its successful realization—for our farmers, our economy, and Ethiopia’s future,” remarked Prime Minister Abiy. He described the agreement as a pivotal milestone in the nation’s pursuit of food security and sustainable development.
