Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Highlights Peace as the Fundamental Goal of Security Agencies

August 5, 2025

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed reiterated that ensuring peace is the primary mission of Ethiopia’s security institutions, following in-depth discussions with security leaders.

The discussions emphasized that peace and security are essential not only for national development but also as core objectives. Participants highlighted the critical role of security forces in combating crimes such as banditry, theft, smuggling, corruption, and human and financial trafficking.

The Prime Minister underscored the importance of protecting the free movement of people and goods, viewing it as vital for economic progress, and called for systematic legal measures to safeguard these freedoms.

The meeting also stressed the need for close cooperation between security agencies and local communities in defending key infrastructure, mining operations, industries, and public services. Citizens’ increasing commitment to peace—through cultural, spiritual, and logistical support—was praised, with recommendations to enhance this engagement through additional training.

Cybersecurity emerged as a significant concern, prompting the Prime Minister to urge increased monitoring of terrorist activities on social media and to direct agencies to strengthen technological defenses and pursue justice for cybercriminals.

Ethiopia’s security institutions are evolving into modern, constitutionally grounded organizations capable of defending national sovereignty amid changing geopolitical landscapes. Enhancing this capacity and countering internal and external threats are seen as crucial steps toward maintaining peace and advancing the nation’s development goals.
