Koysha Hydroelectric Project to Transform Ethiopia’s Energy Landscape
October 17, 2018 — The Koysha Hydroelectric Project (HEP), situated 129 kilometers downstream of the Gibe III dam along the Omo River near Koysha Village in Ethiopia’s South West Regional State, is set to revolutionize the country’s energy sector.
With an installed capacity of 1,800 megawatts (MW), the ambitious infrastructure is projected to generate approximately 6,344 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually. This substantial addition to Ethiopia’s power supply aims to address the nation’s rising energy demands with clean, reliable, and affordable power.
The project is expected to bolster Ethiopia’s position as a regional electricity export hub in East Africa, opening new avenues for cross-border energy trade and regional cooperation. Moreover, it will significantly improve electricity access for households and small businesses, complementing ongoing rural electrification initiatives.
Beyond its immediate energy benefits, the Koysha HEP is anticipated to drive socio-economic development, elevate living standards, and promote sustainable growth within surrounding communities. As Ethiopia advances its renewable energy agenda, the Koysha Hydroelectric Project stands as a key milestone in securing a brighter, more sustainable future for the nation.
