Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed responded to questions and provided explanations during the 6th round, 5th year, 2nd regular session of the House of People’s Representatives.
Regarding Mega Projects
The work being carried out in Ethiopia in the areas of gas, fertilizer, airport, and housing development is truly transformative. By producing fertilizer domestically, agricultural productivity can at least double. This is a major breakthrough for the Ethiopian economy. Once the other projects are completed, they will bring about a significant and lasting change in the nation’s economic landscape.
Regarding the Equitable Use of the Nile Waters
Ethiopia has long faced unjust decisions made against its national interests. It is Ethiopia’s natural and legal right to utilize the Nile waters. The river’s resources are sufficient for shared and equitable use. Ethiopia’s position remains clear: both Egyptians and Sudanese are our brothers. Therefore, what is most beneficial is to grow together through dialogue and cooperation. Ethiopia will neither plan nor act in a way that harms any party.
Regarding the Red Sea
We believe that the Red Sea issue is a legal, historical, geographical, and economic matter that must be approached calmly and thoughtfully. When we ask who decided to deprive Ethiopia of access to the Red Sea, it is clear that institutions were not involved. It is therefore appropriate to question who made such a vital decision. Ethiopia cannot exist in isolation. Our message to our neighbors is that as Ethiopia grows, it will serve as a source of development and prosperity for the entire region. What we seek is shared growth and mutual progress.
Regarding the Pretoria Peace Agreement:
What are the main issues set out in the Pretoria Peace Agreement:
– The election held by the TPLF was annulled, as it was not a legitimate election.
– The regional administration and council established in the Tigray region through illegitimate elections should be dissolved.
– The establishment of an interim administration composed of all parties.
– Respect for the federal system of government elected by the people.
– Disarmament of armed forces operating in the region and their reintegration into normal life through rehabilitation.
– Restoration of interrupted services.
– Return of displaced citizens.
– Recognition that only the federal government has the authority to conduct any foreign relations.
