Ethiopia Launches Africa’s Largest Aviation Project

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed laid the cornerstone for BishoftuInternational Airport, marking the official start of Ethiopia’s largest aviation project today. This historic infrastructure project marks a decisive step toward positioning Ethiopia as Africa’s premier aviation hub, enhancing national connectivity, economic growth, and global aviation leadership.
The project, valued at $12.5 billion, is the largest aviation infrastructure initiative in Africa’s history. It forms part of Ethiopia’s multi-airport strategy to secure its role as the continent’s leading air transport gateway. BIA will strengthen Ethiopian Airlines’ global competitiveness, boost connectivity under the AfCFTA framework, and expand trade and tourism corridors.
Located 40 km southeast of Addis Ababa at 1,910 meters altitude, Bishoftu offers optimal conditions for aircraft performance and efficient passenger handling.
The first phase will accommodate 60 million travelers annually, with a master plan capacity of 110 million, positioning Ethiopia among the world’s premier aviation hubs.
