Ethio-Türkiye Relations Strengthen with President Erdogan’s Visit

February 10, 2018

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan arrived in Ethiopia today for an official visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, marking a pivotal moment in the enduring partnership between the two nations.

‎Ethiopia and Türkiye have cultivated relations for decades, anchored in mutual respect and shared aspirations for sovereignty, development, and regional stability. Türkiye was among the first countries to establish a diplomatic presence in Addis Ababa, while Ethiopia has consistently supported Türkiye’s outreach across Africa.

Erdoğan’s arrival comes at a critical juncture. Ethiopia, emerging from internal challenges, is working to project stability and attract investment. Türkiye, intensifying its Africa diplomacy, positions itself as a bridge between continents. Both nations share a vision of advancing multipolar cooperation and resisting external pressures that undermine sovereignty.

Beyond policy, the visit symbolizes trust and continuity. For Ethiopia, it demonstrates its ability to attract influential partners. For Türkiye, it reflects a commitment to Africa’s future. Together, the two countries are poised to transform historic ties into a modern alliance spanning trade corridors, defense partnerships, and cultural exchanges.

Erdogan’s visit underscores that Ethio–Türkiye relations are not only rooted in history but are actively shaping a resilient, cooperative future.
