Irrigation Driven Projects Boost Food Sovereignty
February 15, 2018
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has highlighted irrigation development as a central pillar of Ethiopia’s agricultural transformation.
The Prime Minsiter emphasized that both surface and groundwater resources are being harnessed to expand irrigation projects, turning previously unproductive areas into hubs of cultivation.
A notable example is the Bilate River region, where large-scale fruit farming initiatives are underway with strong private sector involvement.
These projects, according to the Prime Minister, are expected to significantly boost agricultural output and contribute to Ethiopia’s broader goal of achieving food sovereignty.
The government strengthens such irrigation-driven developments as vital in ensuring sustainable growth, reducing reliance on imports, and strengthening national resilience against food insecurity.
