Feed Development Creates Jobs and Ensures Food Security in Ethiopia
March 23, 2018
The necessity for food and nutrition security in Ethiopia is gaining momentum through the Bounty of Basket Initiative, a program designed to reduce reliance on imports, boost exports, and transform livelihoods.
At the heart of this effort lie the Livestock and Fisheries Sector Development Project is tackling one of the most pressing challenges in the agricultural industry, particularly in animal feed.
The initiative promotes sustainable solutions, enhances productivity, and strengthens resilience across Ethiopia’s livestock and fisheries value chains, ensuring food security, economic growth, and improved livelihoods for millions of households nationwide.
Balanced feed is critical for livestock productivity, yet shortages have long hindered growth. To address this, the initiative is empowering young entrepreneurs to establish small and medium-scale feed processing mills and mixers.
These enterprises are not only supplying quality feed but also creating jobs, injecting energy into local economies, and fostering innovation in rural communities.
By strengthening feed production, Ethiopia is laying the groundwork for a more resilient agricultural sector that can meet domestic demand, reduce costly imports, and expand its footprint in global markets.
More importantly, the initiative is redefining development by linking productivity with employment opportunities, ensuring that progress in livestock and fisheries translates into tangible benefits for citizens.
In this way, feed development is becoming more than a technical solution, it is a driver of national transformation.
