Ethiopia–France Relations Elevated Through Strategic Partnership
May 5, 2018
Ethiopia and France share a diplomatic relationship spanning more than 125 years, rooted in mutual respect and historical friendship. Today, this bond is being revitalized and expanded to embrace economic, social, cultural, and people‑to‑people dimensions, reflecting a shared vision for deeper cooperation.
Following Ethiopia’s political transition in 2010 (E.C), the two nations elevated their ties to a special strategic partnership, marked by high‑level exchanges. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s official visit to Paris in October 2011 was followed within months by President Emmanuel Macron’s landmark trip to Ethiopia. Macron’s visit included a tour of the Lalibela Rock‑Hewn Churches, where he pledged France’s support for heritage conservation through technical expertise and financial assistance.
This partnership has broadened across multiple sectors. Trade, investment, infrastructure, civil aviation, culture, and science have all witnessed rapid growth. Parliamentary diplomacy was further strengthened in September 2017 through dialogue between the friendship groups of both legislatures. France’s role in heritage preservation remains particularly significant, with contributions to the restoration of Lalibela and the Jubilee National Palace.
Economically, the French Development Agency (AFD) is spearheading sustainable projects in Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa, while French companies actively invest in Ethiopia’s expanding market. Educational and cultural ties also flourish, symbolized by the historic Lycee Gebremariam School, which continues to nurture linguistic and academic exchange.
On regional matters, France has expressed support for Ethiopia’s pursuit of seaport access, emphasizing dialogue and peaceful resolution.
Typically, Ethio‑French relations transcend traditional diplomacy. They are anchored in shared interests, mutual trust, and a commitment to lasting friendship between the peoples of both nations. This comprehensive partnership not only honors a rich past but also figures a dynamic future of collaboration and solidarity.
