Green Legacy Initiative advancing Food Security and Sustainability

July 8, 2017

The Government Communication Service announced that Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative is effectively promoting national food security while supporting water conservation and biodiversity preservation.

On July 7, 2017, a collaborative tree-planting event took place at Melkassa Palace, involving representatives from the Government Communication Service, the Government Communications Authority, and members of the Prosperity Party.

State Minister of the Government Communication Service, Mr. Tesfahun Gobezay, emphasized that the initiative not only expands forest coverage but also directly contributes to food security. Since its launch, Ethiopia’s forest cover has steadily increased, reversing previous declines.

State Minister Mr. Kebede Desisa highlighted the country’s major environmental challenges, including deforestation, soil degradation, and drought. He noted that the Green Legacy Initiative has made significant progress in addressing these issues.

FDRE Palace Administration Director General, Mr. Meteku Deressa, added that the program enhances climate resilience and fosters a greener Ethiopia. Besides afforestation efforts, the Melkassa Palace grounds are being developed to support various economic activities such as crop cultivation, poultry farming, cattle fattening, and dairy production.

Participants at the tree-planting session also observed vibrant vegetable and fruit farming operations within the palace compound, illustrating the broader green development strategy in action.
