PM Abiy Ahmed Champions Africa-Led Food System Transformation at UN Summit

Today, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed reaffirmed Ethiopia’s strong commitment to transforming food systems across Africa during his keynote speech at the 2nd United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS+4) held in Addis Ababa.
Addressing an audience of global leaders, development partners, and regional stakeholders, he stressed the urgent need to develop sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food systems to fight hunger, malnutrition, and the impacts of climate change.
The Prime Minister highlighted Ethiopia’s progress in climate-smart agriculture, comprehensive policy reforms, and community-driven initiatives that focus on nutrition and equity.
“Food systems go beyond agriculture—they are about dignity, sovereignty, and survival,” PM Abiy declared. He called for African-led innovation and investment to ensure long-term food security and praised the summit’s role in fostering collaboration. He urged partners to support locally adapted solutions that address Africa’s unique challenges and opportunities.
Taking place from July 21–22, 2017, the summit convened ministers, UN officials, and civil society organizations to review progress since the first summit in 2021 and to accelerate efforts toward achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
Ethiopia’s role as host highlights its increasing influence in shaping global development conversations.
