Ethiopia Hosts ARC-COP16, African Risk Capacity Conference
March 28, 2018
The 16th African Disaster Risk Capacity Conference (ARC-COP 16), taking place in Addis Ababa from March 30 to April 1, 2018 (E.C) marks a decisive moment in Africa’s collective response to escalating climate and humanitarian challenges.
With 39 African Union member states represented, the summit underscores the continent’s determination to strengthen sovereignty, resilience, and financial independence in disaster risk management.
Ethiopia, as host nation, will present its pioneering experience in food and humanitarian sovereignty, alongside its ambitious efforts to build a climate-resilient green smart economy. The country’s Green Legacy Initiative will be shared as a model for sustainable development, highlighting Ethiopia’s commitment to resilience and environmental stewardship.
ARC-COP, a specialized agency of the African Union, plays a critical role in supporting member states to prevent and mitigate disasters. With disasters intensifying daily, strengthening the institution’s capacity is seen as essential to ensuring financial independence and reducing reliance on external aid.
The conference will therefore emphasize the importance of building sustainable financial mechanisms for disaster risk reduction.
Beyond policy discussions, delegates will engage in field visits to development projects, including corridor and riverine initiatives, offering practical insights into resilience-building strategies.
By convening leaders from across the continent, ARC-COP 16 underscores Africa’s determination to shape its own destiny in disaster management, climate adaptation, and sustainable growth.
The Addis Ababa conference is poised to stand as a milestone in Africa’s collective pursuit of sovereignty and resilience.
