Economy Accelerates Sustained Double-Digit Growth
April 12, 2018
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed disclosed today that Ethiopia’s economy is on a strong upward trajectory, marking a significant shift from years of structural weakness and inefficiency.
During opening the government’s third 100-day performance review, Prime Minister Abiy highlighted comprehensive reforms that have transformed the country’s economic landscape over the past nine months.
The Prime Minister underscored that Ethiopia has moved beyond a cycle of fragile institutions, limited private sector participation, and debt-burden state enterprises.
The economy was hindered by low productivity and climate vulnerability in the past, but now driven by a pragmatic political economy approach that strengthens resilience, competitiveness, and inclusivity for sustainable growth.
The Premier has also stated the economy is currently growing at 9.2%, and we expect this to rise to 10.2% in the coming year. This momentum reflects targeted sectoral growth strategies, agriculture expanding at 7.9%, industry surging at 13.2%, and services advancing at 9.3%.
These figures indicate Ethiopia’s determination to sustain double-digit growth while strengthening its economic foundations. The review emphasized that reforms are not only delivering measurable results but also reshaping Ethiopia’s development narrative.
By prioritizing efficiency, competitiveness, and climate resilience, the government aims to secure long-term stability and prosperity, positioning Ethiopia as a rising economic force in the region.
