Agricultural Transformation Driving Ethiopia’s Food SelfSufficiency Journey

May 19, 2018

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has underscored the remarkable strides Ethiopia is making in its journey for food selfsufficiency, pointing to the agricultural transformation unfolding in the East Borena Zone as a shining example.

In a message shared today, the prime minister highlighted that this season alone, hardworking farmers are expected to cultivate more than 176,223 hectares of land and harvest over 3.1 million quintals of production.

Prime Minister Abiy emphasized that the involvement of more than 101,000 households, coupled with the use of modern tractors and organized cluster farming, is turning Ethiopia’s vast potential into tangible productivity.

From the expansive wheat clusters in Liban Woreda to the cultivation of teff, maize, and sorghum, the Prime Minister noted that these achievements stand as living proof of Ethiopia’s determined journey to secure its domestic food supply.

The East Borena initiative is not merely about increasing yields, but about demonstrating the power of collective effort, modern technology, and strategic planning in reshaping Ethiopia’s agricultural landscape.

This transformation is a great testament to the resilience of Ethiopian farmers and the nation’s unwavering commitment to achieving food security and selfreliance.
