Ethiopia aims to learn from Vietnamese growth in key economic sectors

Addis Ababa, 13 April 2017
Minister of FDRE Government Communication Service Legesse Tulu (PhD) cited Vietnam as a model nation from which Ethiopia can learn valuable experience in key economic sectors.
Vietnam’s swift transformation of its agricultural sector, enabling it to not only achieve food sufficiency but also become a significant exporter, is particularly noteworthy. Having once trailed other Southeast Asian nations, Vietnam initiated comprehensive reforms in 1984, dramatically improving the lives of its people, lifting 70% out of poverty by the 1990s.
The Minister emphasized the applicability of Vietnam’s experience, especially in Rice production, to Ethiopia’s own pursuit of food security. He further highlighted Vietnam’s progress in vegetables, fruits, and coffee, as well as the relevance of its strategies to Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative.
Beyond agriculture, Vietnam’s success in establishing industrial parks and fostering growth in electronics, textiles, leather goods, and agricultural product processing offers valuable lessons, he quoted.
Moreover, Dr. Tulu pointed to Vietnam’s advancements in tourism, one of Ethiopia’s key economic pillars, as reflected in Ethiopian Airlines’ plans to increase flights to the country.
Dr. Legesse also underscored the significance of Vietnam’s experience in attracting foreign direct investment as beneficial for Ethiopia’s economic development.
