PM Abiy Ahmed Calls for Peaceful Reconciliation with Tigrayan Community Leaders

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) reiterated the federal government’s commitment to reconciliation and inclusive dialogue during a high-level meeting with community leaders representing various societal groups from the Tigray region. The gathering focused on promoting lasting peace, national healing, and societal unity in line with the objectives of the Pretoria Peace Agreement.
The Prime Minister emphasized that reconciliation, achieved through consultations among elders and religious figures, offers long-term benefits. He highlighted that Ethiopia’s current leadership is the first to formally integrate concepts such as national reconciliation and political dialogue into the country’s governance structure.
“Peace built on negotiation and mutual understanding is solid,” he stated, contrasting it with the destructive cycle of conflict. The discussion also covered critical issues like the situation of internally displaced persons and the socio-economic challenges faced by Tigray.
Tigrayan community leaders called on the government to enhance public engagement and expand dialogue platforms to dispel harmful misconceptions and divisive language that could threaten reconciliation efforts or reignite tensions.
A shared resolve emerged to support Tigray’s recovery and reintegration. Both government officials and community leaders agreed on the importance of enabling Tigrayan citizens and intellectuals to actively participate in Ethiopia’s political and economic life.
Finally, Prime Minister Abiy affirmed his readiness to collaborate with the people, interim authorities, and all stakeholders to restore stability and prosperity to Tigray.
