The Completion of GERD Proves Ethiopians Untied Power to Transform History, Politics and National Destiny- Government Communication Service

The Government Communication Service has announced the full completion and operational launch of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) a landmark achievement, calling it “proof of Ethiopians’ united strength to reshape history, politics, and national destiny.”

As Africa’s largest hydroelectric facility, GERD now stands as a symbol of Ethiopia’s resilience, built through the sweat, knowledge, and sacrifice of all Ethiopians.

The Statement emphasized that Ethiopia is no longer a passive observer of its natural wealth, but an active curator of the Nile’s potential. “It is not just a dam but it is expression of full sovereignty, unity, and African self-reliance.”

The dam’s benefits extend beyond Ethiopia’s borders. It promises regulated water flow, reduced evaporation losses, and flood protection for downstream nations, while offering a model of equitable resource sharing. GERD also opens new opportunities in energy export, fisheries, and tourism, reinforcing Ethiopia’s role as a regional development hub.

Despite diplomatic pressures and historical challenges, Ethiopia has prevailed. The government underscored its commitment to peaceful cooperation, stating, “We are a people of humanity and morality. We do not seek harm, only progress.”

Drawing parallels to the 1896 victory at Adwa, the statement framed GERD as a new chapter in Ethiopia’s legacy of defying colonial-era constraints and shaping global narratives. “Before and after GERD,” it declared, “will define the future of water diplomacy, African politics, and international relations.”

As the turbines roar to life, Ethiopia celebrates not just an engineering feat, but a symbol of national pride and continental promise. Congratulations to all Ethiopians and friends of Ethiopia.
