April 13, 2018
Ethiopia’s Homegrown Economic Reform Agenda is delivering measurable progress, according to extracts from the Government’s 100-day reporting and nine-month performance review of six flagship initiatives. The programs are reshaping agriculture, industry, and digital services, while strengthening national self-reliance.
The Green Legacy initiative has expanded forest coverage to 23.6 percent, boosting farmers’ incomes, creating green jobs, and conserving soil and water resources. Ecosystems are reportedly healthier, underscoring the environmental impact of the program.
Under the National Wheat Development plan, Ethiopia is moving closer to food security and sovereignty. Farmers are adopting new techniques, local industries are sourcing raw materials domestically, and costly imports are being reduced. Rising incomes and job creation are further strengthening rural communities.
The Bounty of the Basket Initiative is increasing agricultural inputs and productivity. Nutritious food is becoming more affordable and accessible, while small-scale trade is thriving and environmental protections are improving.
The Digital Ethiopia is accelerating the country’s digital transformation. Legal, financial, and ID systems are going online, internet access is expanding, mobile payments are growing rapidly, and e-commerce is saving citizens time and money. The Urban and Rural Corridors initiative is also modernizing infrastructure with green transport, enhancing quality of life, and linking cities more effectively with rural areas. Made in Ethiopia is boosting manufacturing capacity, substituting imports, strengthening input supplies, and generating new jobs.
