Addis Ababa’s Riverside Transformation

June 22, 2018

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed inaugurated the grand 10.5-kilometer Entoto-Kebena River and Riverside Development project, opening it to the public and marking a historic milestone in Addis Ababa’s rapid urban transformation. Covering 87.6 hectares, this mega-development successfully blends environmental rehabilitation with world-class civic infrastructure.

On the ecological front, the project features one large dam, 16 smaller dams, three check dams, and three waterfalls, supported by 20 kilometers of retaining walls. Over 59 hectares have been transformed into vibrant green spaces, rooted by 50,000 newly planted trees and extensive soil conservation terraces.

Urban connectivity and features received an equally historic upgrade. The site boasts 10 kilometers of asphalt roads, 33 kilometers of well-lit pedestrian walkways, and 21 architectural footbridges.  It has built as a premier public destination; the riverside now hosts nine sports fields, seven playgrounds, two amphitheaters, 10 cafeterias, and two public libraries.

Essential modern conveniences are fully integrated, including 19 kilometers of drainage systems, 23 public restrooms, seven plazas, and seven parking lots accommodating 695 vehicles.

This landmark achievement, officially launched by the Prime Minister, redefines Addis Ababa’s cityscape as a powerful blueprint for sustainable green development and modern African urbanization.
